Bras for a Cause: LJ, Mojo in the Morning Donate to Karmanos

Lady Jane’s CEO Chad Johnson and Channel 955‘s Mojo of Mojo In The Morning came together Thursday to present a check for $10,000 to Karmanos Cancer Institute‘s breast cancer support programs.

The cause is important to both gentlemen, who each lost their mother to breast cancer.

“I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 14 years old,” said Mojo. “During the month of October, I’m always reminded that my mom lost her battle with this disease. It’s still painful.”

Johnson, who lost his mother seven years ago, has similar feelings.

“It breaks my heart daily to know that not only did I lose my mom; my kids no longer have their grandmother in their lives,” he said.

Bras for a Cause

The money given to Karmanos was part of Johnson and Mojo’s combined Bras for a Cause initiative

which bras were dropped off at Lady Jane’s locations to help raise awareness of breast cancer prevention and treatment.

Johnson agreed to match the donated items bra-for-dollar up to $10,000.

“Our sincerest thanks to the entire Mojo in the Morning team and their listeners,” said Nick Karmanos, senior vice president, Institutional Relations, Karmanos Cancer Institute in a press release, “and to Chad Johnson and the team at Lady Jane’s Haircuts for Men, for their enthusiasm for Bras for a Cause and their tremendous generosity that results in greater awareness of breast health and additional funds to help cancer patients at their greatest time of need.”

Karmanos’ breast cancer support programs assist patients in numerous ways: providing free mammograms, biopsies, treatment, help with prescription coverage and co-pays, as well as other medical needs. Karmanos also assists patients with non-medical needs, such as rent, utilities, food, transportation and more.

“When it comes to treating our patients, we realize that in addition to exceptional medical care to survive their illness, they also need the emotional and spiritual support that goes beyond the medicine,” said Karmanos.

Raising Awareness

Beyond the Karmanos Cancer Institute, Bras for a Cause will benefit other nonprofits by giving away the thousands of donated bras collected during the initiative.

HAVEN, which offers comprehensive programs for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, Free the Girls, which offers sustainability programs for victims of human trafficking, and The Salvation Army will all receive bras.

Ultimately, the initiative went beyond raising money and clothing and brought to the surface many kind-hearted people who went out of their way to help others.

On Thursday’s Mojo In The Morning show, Johnson recalled one donation in particular that stood out to him.

“I saw a bus from Senior Living in Shelby Township driving up to our corporate office in Troy, Michigan,” he said. “I see five or six elderly women get out and they each have four or five bras on them.”

The ladies brought more than 40 bras with them as well as an envelope with more than 100 dollars for breast cancer awareness.

“It was touching to know that they would leave Senior Living and drive 20 miles to drop off 35-40 bras and envelope with two checks for 127 dollars,” said Johnson. “It was amazing.”
